Peanut butter pill pocket: homemade dog food recipe

Making your own homemade dog food is a great way to save money and ensure that your pup is eating the healthiest food possible. Our easy DIY recipe will show you how to make a balanced meal for your furry friend in just minutes.

Not only will you be providing your dog with the best nutrition possible, but you’ll also know exactly what ingredients are going into their food. This is a great way to avoid any potential allergies or sensitivities that your pup may have.

If you ever needed to give your dog a pill you must know how impossible it seems. You can’t really explain to your dog how to swallow a pill, and stuffing it down their throat is out of the question.

This is why I came up with this chicken meat balls for dogs recipe that is very nutritious and will help you when you need to give medication to your dog.

The only thing you will need to do for this homemade dog food recipe is to boil the meat, mix it with the peanut butter and breadcrumbs, and insert the pill before giving it to your dog. It is as simple as that. I chose chicken breasts because they are the easiest to work with but you can use another part of the chicken without issues. Baked chicken will work here as well, so if you have any leftovers simply shred them and mix them with peanut butter.

No-cook pill-pockets for dogs

If you’re short on time and need to give your dog the pill fast choose something with a creamy texture like cream cheese. Simply take a spoonful of cream-cheese and stick the pill inside. You could do the same with peanut butter only. This quick fix should not be used regularly.

  • 4 chicken breasts (medium-sized, fresh if possible)
  • ½ cup peanut butter (smooth or chunky)
  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • 2 tbsp coconut or olive oil

Step 1.

Wash the chicken breasts and place them inside a medium-sized saucepan. Fill with water until you cover the chicken pieces. Bring to a fast boil then simmer covered for 30 minutes. If using baked chicken skip this step.

Step 2.

Once the chicken is cooked and no longer pink inside remove the saucepan from heat. Drain the chicken pieces, (or pluck them from baked chicken leftovers) and place them on a chopping board. Chop as finely as you can. Do not use a blender as you will need some meat structure.

Step 3.

Place the shredded chicken inside a large bowl and add the peanut butter. This would be a good time to mix it all up with your hands.

Step 4.

Drizzle some coconut or olive oil on your hands and start pulling meat balls by the tablespoon. Roll them into a ball and them toss them into the breadcrumbs to keep their shape. Decide on the scale of the meat balls based on the size of the pills. You want to make the balls just a tad bigger than the pills. If the pills seem to big cut them in half, roll the meat balls accordingly and stuff the pill inside the ball.

Step 5.

You can place the leftovers in the fridge they will keep for 4-5 days, or freeze them up to 1 month. Feel free to use the chicken and peanut butter meatballs as dog food. You can boil some veggies and add them to the mix to create a more balanced food for your dogs.

Bon appétit!
