Salmon casserole for dogs: homemade dog food recipe

Tired of the same old dog food? We know you are. And we have the perfect solution – a homemade dog food recipe that will make your pup happy and healthy.

All you need is a slow cooker, some simple ingredients, and about an hour of your time each week to make this delicious food for your furry friend. Plus, it’s much cheaper than buying commercial dog food.

Salmon for dogs might sound weird to some people, but I am here to tell you that dogs love fish as much as cats do! You can make this baked salmon and rice casserole for dogs in a larger batch and freeze it for up to 1 month.

What I love about this homemade dog food dish is its nutritional value for dogs. If you’re looking to strengthen your dog’s bones, give them a shiny coat and enough energy to last them throughout the day then I highly recommend this dish.

We can absolutely consider this meal a comfort food for dogs. It is rich in flavor and the sweet potatoes I also included inside will give it a creamy texture. This salmon casserole for dogs is also full of vegetables that I recommend baking at low temperatures for a longer time to develop those amazing flavors.

What kind of rice to use for dogs?

Basically, any kind of rice will be good for your pooch as long as you also include protein in your food. The best kind (my vet’s opinion) is plain white rice because it is the easiest to digest.

How to make the perfect salmon casserole for dogs?

– When preparing this meal, resist chopping the salmon in tiny pieces. Each piece should be at least 1’’ long, or you can place the whole salmon inside and break it up after the meal is ready;

– Make sure to use high-quality chicken stock;

– Shred the carrots, sweet potatoes and chop the broccoli into small pieces. Some dogs tend to love vegetables, but others do not. By shredding and chopping everything you will make sure they get all the nutritional benefits.

Note on how to cook plain white rice for dogs

Bring 3 cups of water to quick boil then lower the temperature to simmer. Place 1 cup of dry white rice inside the water and cook covered for 13 minutes. Do not worry if the rice doesn’t look fully cooked because you will be baking it for another 45 minutes.

Step 1

Preheat oven to 200°C/350°F.  Grease a 13’’ x 09’’ baking dish (use larger if necessary). Set aside.

Step 2

Heat the olive oil in a large pan and add the carrots, sweet potatoes and broccoli while constantly mixing with a wooden spoon. Cook on medium-high heat until soft. This should take 5-8 minutes.

Step 3

Turn off the heat, then add the salmon and rice to the pan. Gradually add the stock until everything is mixed well.

Step 4

Transfer the ingredients to the baking pan and bake in the oven for 45 minutes. After it is done remove it from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before serving it to your dog.

Step 5

If you got any leftovers, you can place them in single serving bags in the freezer for later use.

You can store fish in the freezer for up to 1 month after cooking. When placing food in the fridge always write down the date of freezing so you won’t have to throw away undated food that you have forgotten.

Bon appétit!
