Baked whitefish fillets and veggies for dogs – homemade dog food recipe

You must have noticed by now that fish is present in most canned dog foods on the market. So if you were wondering ‘Is fish safe for dogs?’ the answer is YES (but not all), so the best way to give it to your dog is to prepare it yourself at home. Do not worry, all the homemade dog food recipes you will find on this website are SAFE for dogs and I give you the exact names of the fish you will need to get.

How to make baked fish fillets for dogs

This recipe for dogs is super-easy, all you need to do is gather the ingredients, chop the veggies, arrange everything in a baking dish and let it bake for 20 minutes.

Still, there are some things you’ll need to know to create the perfect dish for your dog.

Which Whitefish Fillets to Choose: If you are standing in the supermarket aisle, wondering ‘What type of whitefish is good for my dog?’ here’s a quick answer:

Bass, Cod, Grouper and Haddock are safe for your dog.

Be careful though and only get de-boned fillets for the doggy because any fish bone no matter how small can be a choking hazard!

How to bake juicy fish fillets for dogs: Most great chefs recommend mixing some herbs, spices and lemon juice into softened butter and spreading that over the fish before you start baking. By doing this you lock in the juice and prevent over drying.

In our case we will not use butter, lemon and spices because these ingredients are not good for your dog’s health. What I recommend instead is using a blend of coconut oil and herbs. We will achieve the same and lock in the juices without risking your pooches’ health.

What veggies to use with baked fish fillets for dogs: In this homemade dog food recipe I added sweet potatoes and carrots. Feel free to substitute these for asparagus, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, pumpkin, green beans or peas without worry.

If you want to be sure your dog will eat the veggies (since some dogs do not like them, just like humans) feel free to shred them before adding them to the baking pan.

  • 4 whitefish fillets (bass, cod, grouper or haddock)
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 2 medium or large carrots
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 tsp dry basil or 1 tbsp fresh basil
  • 1 tsp dry rosemary or 1 tsp fresh rosemary

Step 1.

Preheat oven to 400°K or 200°C. Coat the baking dish with 1 tbsp of coconut oil and set aside.

Step 2.

Prepare your veggies. Wash the sweet potatoes and carrots and chop them into small pieces. You can also shred them to ensure your dog will eat them later.

Step 3.

Prepare the spread for the fish fillets. Mix the coconut oil with some basil and rosemary and set aside.

Step 4.

Take the fish fillets and gently pass through them with your fingers to ensure there are not bones inside. If you feel a bone, take the tweezers and get it out by pulling gently with one hand while holding the fish with the other. Next place the fish fillets inside the baking dish and spread the coconut oil and herbs over them.

Step 5.

Arrange the veggies around the fish anyway you like. It is only important to fill all the gaps to allow the food to cook evenly in the oven.

Step 6.

Bake at 400°K or 200°C for 20 minutes or until the fillets flake easily. You can make a quick test with a fork. Once outside, allow the fish to rest for 15-20 minutes before feeding your dog.

This gourmet food for dogs will be quite the treat this season. It is easy to prepare and very healthy for your pooch. Only serve it fresh or kept in the fridge in portioned amounts for up to 3 days.

Bon appétit!
